  Letter One

  21 July, 2006

  Dear Sirs,

Our foreman, Mr. Li Ming, had an accident on July 6, 2006. He crushed his forefinger (食指) when operating a machine. At that time, we didn’t think the accident was serious enough to report, but Mr. Li has returned to his work after an absence of two weeks and is still unable to carry on his normal duties. We therefore wish to make a claim (索赔) under the above policy (保险单) and shall appreciate your sending us the necessary claim form.

  Yours faithfully,

  (Signature)

  Letter Two

  27 July, 2006

  Dear Sirs,

We have received your letter of July 21 and noted that you made a claim for the accident of Mr. Li Ming. We would, however, remind you of the terms of the policy that this claim should have been submitted within three days after the accident. More than two weeks have now passed. Consequently, your claim to compensation(赔偿) under the policy has been forfeited (放弃、没收).

Nevertheless, as an exceptional measure, we have decided to overlook its late submission, though we are bound to say that it should have been clear from Mr. Li’s absence from work that this accident was more serious than you had supposed and that there seems to be no good reason why this claim should not have been made earlier.

We are enclosing (附上) a claim form as requested, but must emphasize that future claims cannot be entertained if you cannot comply with the terms of the policy.

  Yours faithfully,

  (Signature)

Generally speaking, most plants are green. The green matter in plants is given a scientific name: chlorophyll(叶绿素). When the sun shines upon plants, chlorophyll will produce some kind of special sugar-based substances that keep the plants alive.

It has long been known that when exposed to sunlight under suitable conditions of temperature and moisture(湿度), the green parts of plants absorb carbon dioxide()from the atmosphere(空气)and release oxygen to it in return. These exchanges are just the opposite of those which take place in human and animal’s respiration(呼吸). The course in which plants take in carbon dioxide()and release oxygen(O)is called photosynthesis.

In photosynthesis(光合作用), carbohydrates(碳水化合物)are formed from carbon dioxide()and water()by the green matter(chlorophyll)of plant cells in the presence of sunlight. Oxygen is the product of this chemical reaction. For each molecule(分子)of carbon dioxide()used, one molecule(分子) of oxygen is produced. Therefore, such a chemical equation(反应式)for photosynthesis can be summed up as the following:

  58. In photosynthesis, the combination of carbon dioxide and water to form sugar results in the production of __________.

  59. In photosynthesis, water _________.

  A. must be present

  B. is produced in carbohydrates

During the American War of Independence, women played an active part in fighting in three ways. First, women formed a special branch of the Continental Army, spoken of as “Women of the Army”, some women worked as nurses in the field hospitals, tending wounded soldiers; some worked as cooks in the army troops; a good many women acted as water carriers, when necessary, all the above-mentioned women who had had many chances to observe how the men fired guns, could take the place of the wounded men. The second way that women served in the Army was as regular troop members who wore men’s uniforms and fought side by side with their men comrades. In theory, women were not supposed to fight as soldiers in battles. But when the Army was badly short of soldiers and when women were really good soldiers, who would be against women fighting in battles? Thirdly, from city streets to country villages, many able women were in charge of the work to supply food, clothing and medicine for the Army, and when the situation was dangerous, they called on all the women to take up arms to defend their own homes.
